Sleeping Indian Sanctuary
Sleeping Indian Sanctuary
"Sleeping Indian Sanctuary"
Acrylic on Canvas, 16x72
In March of 2022, I took a return trip to one of my most favorite locations in Jackson Hole: The National Elk Refuge. Spread out under the shadow of Sleeping Indian Mountain (sometimes referred to as Sheep Mountain), thousands of elk had congregated for another winter of feeding and sanctuary, protected from the harsh high mountain elements and hidden predators. It was the perfect day. They were feeding, roaming, and drinking from the Flat Creek, which wound its way through the valley like a crystal blue ribbon. Sometimes there would be a random bugle from one of the bulls, or the clashing of antlers in a spontaneous sparring. I was once again enthralled with the scene. I knew I had to paint it.
Over 14 months later, the project was finally complete. I spent countless hours painting each elk, tree, hill, and snow patch with careful attention to detail and color. I wanted it to feel like the viewer was truly there, experiencing the captivating landscape like I did. There’s so many little things to notice and appreciate in a glorious scene like this.
At over 6 feet across (frame included), its the widest panoramic painting I’ve ever completed - perfect for that special spot in your home! If you have any questions regarding this piece, feel free to call me at 307-220-4290.
